Resolve to Love Your Skin in the New Year

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had an amazing holiday season!

Now that the celebrating and catching up with loved ones is over, it’s time to get serious about those New Year’s Resolutions. I’ll share one of mine with you: To care for my skin from the inside out. After all, it’s the largest organ!

When we nourish our bodies, our skin glows. On the other hand, what we put on our skin gets absorbed by the body, for better or worse.

If you resolved to make skin care part of your self-care in 2024, here are my top tips for accomplishing that!

1. Get more sleep

There’s a reason it’s called beauty sleep! While you sleep, your skin restores itself as blood flow increases, collagen is rebuilt, and damage from UV exposure is repaired.

Your skin’s ability to heal, combat aging, and retain moisture depend on sleep. When you don’t get enough sleep, your skin won’t have enough time to repair itself.

2. Pay attention to what you drink

Excess alcohol and caffeine can have a dehydrating effect on your skin, depleting your skin of nutrients and fluids that are essential for healthy, glowing skin. The effects of dehydration include a dull complexion, bloating and puffiness, and dry skin, which may lead to more pronounced fine lines and wrinkles. When you drink plenty of water, it balances your skin’s water and oil content, which prevents excess oil and sebum from building up. So pour yourself some water and get ready for less clogged pores and breakouts!

3. Eat your way to glowing skin

If you are what you eat, then eat food that improves the health of your skin! To plump and maintain your skin and promote healing, opt for healthy fats that produce collagen. Loaded with beneficial fats and vitamins E and C to protect your skin from sun damage and air pollution, avocados can be your locally-sourced secret to happy skin. To decrease inflammation and increase moisturization, opt for fish high in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon.

Found in sweet potatoes, beta carotene can act as a natural sunblock for further protection from the sun’s damaging rays. And the vitamin C, lycopene, and other carotenoids found in tomatoes may aid in preventing wrinkles.

4. Don’t forget your sunscreen!

I’ve already mentioned the havoc UV rays can wreak on your skin, so it should come as no surprise that I am a huge advocate for wearing sunscreen. But please make sure that it is a zinc oxide or titanium dioxide-based sunscreen.

While intended to protect the skin from sunburn and aging, many chemical sunscreens can actually do more harm than good. In fact, recent FDA studies report a link between the oxybenzone, avobenzone, and homosalate found in commercial sunscreens and toxic breakdown byproducts and hormone disruption. It’s also possible that these chemicals can penetrate the skin and reach living tissues.

Sunscreens and sun protection creams containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, and other chemicals are not only bad news for your health, but are a threat to our coral reefs, decreasing corals’ defenses against bleaching, destroying their DNA, and damaging their development. There are so many zinc oxide or titanium dioxide-based options on the market, making it easy to find a sunscreen that is better for your skin and the health of the ocean.

5. Get a facial!

Facials blend the power of massage, touch, and professional products to offer a healing, relaxing experience. Not only can a facial be healing, but it can also cleanse your pores on a deep level and boost blood circulation under the skin, accelerating the skin cell renewal process. Sick of dealing with puffy skin? I offer a 45 minute facial to help promote detoxification by manipulating the lymphatic system lying just beneath the skin… in under an hour!

If you want to smooth fine lines, prevent wrinkles, and improve your skin’s elasticity, my spa facials can encourage the production of collagen (the skin’s building block). This luxurious facial includes hot steam, sculpting Face massage, and a relaxing arm massage. With my spa facial, you can slip into a state of relaxation and wake to beautiful, glowing skin 75 minutes later.

What are your resolutions for 2024? Why not book an appointment with me and tell me in person?!

I’d love to be part of helping you make your New Year’s goals a reality!

Hugs & Aloha,

Kacie
